HISTORY
The street names in Zaans Hout, such as Mahoniehout (mahogany), Teakhout (teak) and Vurehout (pine), refer to the timber trade, for centuries the engine of the Zaan region. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, hundreds of windmills turned here, many of them sawmills. They made the Zaan one of the first industrial areas in Europe and a centre of shipbuilding. Tsar Peter the Great even came to Zaandam in 1697 to learn the trade of ship's carpenter. His house still stands on the Krimp.
